Today we have launched our Jet Zero Consultation:

The consultation was published alongside the Transport Decarbonisation Plan: Decarbonising transport: a better, greener Britain:

The consultation focuses on the rapid development of technologies in a way that maintains the benefits of air travel and maximises the opportunities that decarbonisation can bring for the UK. We have proposed actions across the following five measures:

  • increasing the efficiency of our existing aviation system
  • developing ambitious plans for a UK sustainable aviation fuel industry
  • accelerating the development of zero emission aircraft and flight
  • developing and implementing carbon markets and greenhouse gas removal methods
  • and exploring how we can influence consumers to make sustainable travel choices.

Proposals in the consultation include commitments for the UK aviation sector to reach net zero by 2050, an earlier 2040 net zero target for domestic aviation, and a 2040 zero emission target for airports in England. We are seeking views on our proposed approach through this consultation, recognising the important role that will need to be played by the sector, wider industry, academia, innovators, and the public in realising our ambitions.

The consultation will last for 8 weeks and end on 8 September. I encourage you to respond to this consultation as the responses will help shape our final Jet Zero Strategy which is due to be published later this year. You can respond to the consultation using the online survey:
