They also have an avionics facility and an interiors unit in South Wales. Now part of the IAG Group, BA are working on adaptations to the building to accommodate the Dreamliner to secure their future in South Wales. GEAES GEAES Nantgarw is building on its position, to become the MRO global centre of excellence for wide bodied jet engines, by securing the forthcoming GE9X engine at entry into service (EIS), safeguarding 400 jobs. As recently as April, 2016, GE Aviation started testing the world’s largest jet engine, the GE9X (as wide as the body of a Boeing 737 and wider than Concord). Sky’s the limit for aerospace company Raytheon UK The air eld at Broughton in North Wales has been a key part of British aerospace history since 1939, when a ‘shadow factory’ manufactured Wellington and Lancaster bombers for the war effort. The site’s hangars have more recently been owned by a number of large companies, producing iconic aircraft and offering maintenance facilities. Noted for its rapid response capabilities, the engineering team at Broughton operates as the design authority for the RAF Sentinel R1 and Shadow R1 aircraft, providing continued modi cations and maintenance for both eets. Delivering the airbourne capabilities of the ASTOR monitoring system, the Sentinel R1 relies on Broughton to service its on board Dual Mode Radar (DMR). Occupying Broughton air eld for the last 20 years are Raytheon UK, providing a service support for light commercial and defence aircraft. They currently have 120 employees on site, as well as a edgling apprenticeship scheme thanks to links to Coleg Cambria, which will see seven students become fully quali ed engineers and go straight in to employment at Broughton. The company combines years of experience with manufacturing techniques that utilise state-of- the-art equipment. Operating from a 2,500 m2 purpose-built manufacturing facility in Pembroke Dock, United Aerospace was established in 2004 following a management buy-out at DPS Composites which had operated from the location since 1999. At the time of the buy-out, some 80 per cent of United Aerospace’s business was focused on the aircraft industry. Since then, it has retained a strong order book in aircraft markets, supplying product for applications ranging from unmanned aerial vehicles to aircraft seats. It has also successfully diversi ed to serve automotive, medical and wind energy companies and other applications demanding high strength, light weight materials.
